The very idea of having the congressional “leaders” negotiate with the President on the debt ceiling is obviously unproductive. The republicans should, instead, prepare legislation having major spending cuts, effective immediately, not over 10 years. They should try to get democrat members to buy into it, then pass it. If the democrats won’t participate or the president vetos it, then the responsibility for a failure to raise the debt ceiling will properly belong to the democrats. Keep the dept ceiling where it is and live with it. The whole idea of a ceiling that is blithely raised every time it is hit is something only Washington could think is sanity.
